LATE NIGHT WAREHOUSE PARTIES ARE THE BEST
Late night warehouse parties are probably the best thing I have encountered since I started my clubbing/ raving journey. I will start by saying that I am incredibly into both House and Techno, which both go somewhat hand in hand with the warehouse scene. I would even go as far as to say that the warehouse party is the true home of both of these genres of EDM. While I’m sure every style has an underground scene, I think there is something about this particular space that is coded into it’s DNA.
I have wanted to do a post about warehouse parties for some time, but I have struggled to figure out a point of attack because there are probably a million things I could say about them, so I decided that I will be doing a series of articles on Late Nights and Warehouse parties (there will be one about desert raves as well so get pumped for that). So to kick off this little series I want to just talk a little bit about the experience of attending one of these fantastic events.
The LA warehouse scene is very committed to keeping the original spirit of the parties that inspired them alive. Most organizers will not release the address of the event until a few hours, and the venues tend to be grungy and minimal ‘boiler room’ style events. Yes, this does mean that it can be kind of difficult for those of you who don’t live close to downtown, because you only have a few hours to figure out how to make your way to the venue, but where there is a will, there is a way. It's annoying, but it can be done.
The venues that organizers chose for these events are some of the coolest in LA. As someone who goes clubbing almost every weekend, I have seen a lot of what LA has to offer in terms of clubs, event spaces, and lounges, but I can say matter of factly that none of them have been as cool as some of the warehouse spaces that I have seen at Late nights. Now, this might just be because I love the underground 'boiler room' aesthetic, but I also like that they feel far more intimate and music-focused then other venues around the city.
The beauty of these parties is that they aren’t clubs. I know I have gone on and on about how I have a love-hate relationship with clubs mostly because of some of the people that they attract, but I have to bring it up again. No one is going to bother you at a warehouse party. Literally no one. You are given the opportunity to dance how you want, wear what you want, and enjoy your evening without worrying about some random person trying to grind on you without your permission. In fact, most people are so wrapped up in doing their own thing that if you wanted to go the whole night without talking to anyone but the bartender when you order a drink, you totally could. So if you are antisocial like me, it’s kind of perfect.
Another thing that makes warehouse parties so cool is that you will not only get to hear a lot of OG Detroit house but a lot of small and off the wall underground acts well. If you are a fan of the more industrial, minimal sound, then a lot of these parties are going to be the perfect place for you. There is very little that is as cool as hearing off the wall, intense music in a dark, steamy room with no distractions and with other people who came solely for the love of the music.
To wrap up this little love letter to late nights, I want to talk about one of my favorite things about them: the magic of seeing the sunrise over the city as you go home after a long night of dancing. This is especially true here in LA where the sunrises are always stunning.
